World Cuisine – Czech baking

Tuesday 26th April 2022

As part of a fundraising effort within the International Expat Association (IEA), I agreed to host a baking morning to show them traditional Czech baking.  Of course I had to choose the special kolace which are very special and traditional Czech cuisine, relatively easy to do even though fiddly and time consuming as so many steps in the process, but taste delicious.

I must say it was a very successful morning, well thought through and organised as time was crucial.  I let everyone do their own things and was just overseeing them. In my kitchen with limited surface space and by improvising with different ingredients due to shortages or simply having different products, we managed.

I was amazed. I made 6 batches of dough from 5kg of flour in one hour and with the speed of baking the oven was working was to the limit.

We had a nice sit down to enjoy the baked goods and the mazanec I baked the day before just in case the baking was a disaster!  All this with tea and a chat. We were all buzzing and the morning was a topic of conversation for days afterwards.

An article was published in the IEA newsletter for this month; see pictures and then have a go yourself!
