Weekend in Galle
Friday 3rd – Monday 6th July 2020
Whenever we can, we escape from the noise of Colombo and head to somewhere quiet. After so long under curfew, a second weekend in quick succession at our friend’s Gintota beach villa was therefore something to look forwards to. This time, we were joined by our friends from Turkish Kurdistan and the villa’s owner, so all three large bedrooms were in use.
On Friday we all met up for dinner en route at Indian Hut on the outskirts of Galle where they cook really tasty food. Afterwards following the short drive to the villa an evening of swimming in the pool, chatting under the night sky and listening to the sea was enjoyed; so energising and peaceful at the same time.
On Saturday we had a good time by the pool and in the garden, and at 4 pm went to our favourite Wijaya beach to meet up with two other families from Colombo and where the children managed to swim with a large turtle. One of the children has created a video that you can see, here. The best pizza in Galle was afterwards enjoyed by all the kids. I had one of the tastiest grilled tuna and salads I’ve ever enjoyed, and Steve a Thai shrimp curry that was served in a beach environment but which wouldn’t have disgraced a five star restaurant with its depth of flavour. As you can guess, after sunset we had another evening swim in the villa’s pool and a very late night talking and enjoying long drinks.
Sunday morning was also spent relaxing by the pool and in the garden, with another family coming to visit us for a cup of coffee on their way to Colombo. Lots of noisy happiness with six children in the pool! We went surfing for the first time in the afternoon, for which another blog post will follow. Suffice to say here, great fun!
Steve went back to Colombo with our Turkish friends in the evening as he had a lot of work to do on Monday but the villa has no internet connection of its own and the 4G signal is very weak from all providers. I stayed on with the kids and the villa owner for another day, returning home on Monday evening tired and sore from the surfing, but very happy.
