COVID update – Half term holiday sooner than expected

6.-11. 2020

Due to the pandemic situation, we got an e-email from school on Monday 5th October saying that the half term holiday had been brought forward; instead of 26th to 30th October 2020, it would be 6th to 9th.

Of course, kids were happy to have a holiday, but I could see a puzzled look on their faces when I told them. I feel they are starting to get frustrated with the sustained chain of events, changing circumstances and situations, having to adapt to them at the last moment. We had no plans for half term, so staying indoors and chilling was fine. So we did.

All events have been cancelled; no IEA social we put so much effort in to planning, no meeting friends for lunch or coffee. When another e-mail came, informing us about school closure and online schooling again, starting on 12th October until at least 1st November, they were not happy. For the first time ever, they were sad not going to school! We will see how the situation pans out.

Covid cases are on the rise here as elsewhere and even in the community now, not only in the quarantine centres. It is believed a group of workers for a garment factory were brought to Sri Lanka from India without following the strict quarantining rules.  If true, this simple act has undone seven months of national sacrifice and hard work.
