Birthday cake for Emi’s friend

Thursday 2. 4 2020

Emi’s very good school friend Sarang had her birthday and the only gift we could give her during curfew was to bake her a cake.  She wanted strawberry cake, so I ordered strawberries on Monday and hoped they would arrive by Thursday but unfortunately they did not.  Emilka baked a delicious vanilla cake according to a recipe for English Victoria sponge on Wednesday after school, but we have a broken mixer, so she had to cope with an old crooked whisk.  To decorate it, on Thursday we made whipped cream from a packet and used this and strawberry jam instead of strawberries (they arrived just too late in the evening by the way), decorating it with a few candles from a friend.

Well, curfew is on, how are we going to get it to a friend who lives 3 km away from us? Luckily, one of my acquaintance’s husband is working at one of the embassies and their car has a special sticker allowing them to be on the street.  I asked her to be a barer of good wishes, and Sarang waited with her dad in front of their apartment. We sent her a short video on her cell phone saying happy birthday to her and letting her know that cake is on it’s way.  Sarang’s Daddy then sent us a video of singing her “Happy birthday” and her blowing the candles with her brother by her side.  Happy birthday Sarang!

Strange celebrating in difficult times and practicing social distance, but one has to be grateful to celebrate every new morning, not just a birthday.
