Surf’s Up

Sunday, 5th July 2020

As mentioned in my previous blog post, I suggested that we all go surfing for the first time in our lives. I actually suggested it to the children a long time ago but they didn’t like the idea then.  This time though, Misa (13), Emilka (13), Lorin (10) and I decided to give it a try.  We each had an instructor and we were in the sea for over an hour. Right on the first try I scraped both knees! As it was a fresh sore, the salt irritated it even more and so getting onto the board was pretty painful.  The water was creeping into my ears, my mouth and my eyes, the waves were big enough to be unpleasant, I had a wardrobe malfunction and am not a fan of the sea at the best of times, but I did not give up.  The children did not have any problem learning the basics of surfing as Steve’s photos testify – but he missed me managing to stand up and surf to the shore on my last attempt!

We climbed out of the sea and the children were so excited that they wanted to repeat it tomorrow, they enjoyed it that much.  It took me half an hour to calm down and as a reward we had a tasty dinner and a coffee. Steve was taking pictures from the shore and said he enjoyed it more than we did; so much going on at the same time and so many creative opportunities!

My body is still recovering, and especially on the Tuesday (two days after surfing) I was very sore.  My knees have dry scabs now and thankfully are healing.  The children had aching arms on Monday, but that was it for them! We look forward to having another weekend by the sea soon, hoping Steve will surf with us.  He has a GoPro, so hopefully will get some action shots and video from a boarder’s perspective.
