Almost directly outside the Hotel Sudu Araliya is the Pothgul Viharaya, “pothgul” meaning library. Built under the order of King Parakamabahu the Great who ruled from 1153 to 1185 AD, this is the oldest known library in Sri Lanka.  No books today, but plenty of local residents!
