Our FTE – Favourite Tesco Employee
August 2023
Knowing we were returning to England at the end of June, we started to look for summer work for Misa.
However by the time we got home, the village shop and the village pub, ideal places as no need to travel, were already full, so he hit the internet and got himself an interview for Tesco and was offered the job straight away. A tall and charismatic boy – who would refuse him?
He started to work 20 hours a week (Thursdays after school and Sundays), and if overtime was available, he would take it. Using the bus to and from work is easy during the week, but there is no public transport on Sunday, so we have to take him and bring him, or his colleague sometimes gives him a lift home, which is convenient.
He got his blue uniform within two weeks of working there and he seems to be fitting-in perfectly. So far, he is spending most shifts in the beer, wine and spirits section, so perhaps they are using his height for the higher shelves with valuable stock that cannot be fumbled.
Sometimes he brings yellow label items with £0 on it from the staff room (mostly bread and buns) and as a special incentive he will get a 15% discount on shopping after three months probationary service. Supermarkets often get bad press but he is earning the adult hourly rate and hoping to build a computer with his money. With his first bank account opened and his own money in it, certainly he enjoyed withdrawing a symbolic first Tenner – later framed and placed on display in his bedroom!
Misa also enjoyed buying Steve a special bottle of gin (well, I had to physically buy it and then give it back to him!) to say thank you for everything done for him. He also gave me a gift likewise – though being a fluffy mop head I think Steve got the better deal, whatever Misa’s humour behind mine!
We enjoy being in sthe store and seeing our FTE – FAVOURITE TESCO EMPLOYEE. This term was Emi’s way of showing her love for her twin brother, without realising that in HR circles it also means Full Time Equivalent! We much prefer Emi’s meaning!
We are wishing Misa an enjoyable working time at Tesco, gainging invaluable skills and experience for life.
