Higher Education

Knowing that we would be leaving Sri Lanka after the children’s IGCSEs, lots of thought has already gone in to the next step of  their education.

Emilka knew exactly what she wanted, and with her love of horses applied for Moreton Morrel and Hartpury colleges to study Equine Management. She had her interview in December last year and was granted a conditional offer from both colleagues. She would prefer to study at Hartpury and live in halls, so now she needs to get the required grades for her IGCSEs to turn her wish in to reality.

Until recently Misa had not had “that motivational event / aha moment”, as he calls it, to give him a direction in which to go with his studies but when he did it was typically thoughtful Misa. He decided to study A-level Business Studies or Economics, Geography, and Psychology.  Why?  Because as he explained, he is going to live through a climate change disaster and this mix of subjects equips him to play a role in leading mitigation and ensures that he will less likely be unemployed.

He chose two different schools to apply to (Chipping Campden and Alcester Grammar) so let’s see how things work out based on his IGCSE results.  He had interviews for both these schools in April and did really well, especially with the headmaster at Chipping Campden complimenting him on his adult and well-developed way of being able to express himself.

All is set and they are each making plans for when we return back to the UK; big change for them, as Steve and me with only our home and our family bond under its roof as constants.

The photo is of Misa and Emilka with their talented mathematics home tutor, Mr. Fernando after he had tutored them for the final time.  Talented with his chosen subject, he is also talented at bringing out the best in each child and exhibiting great patience and tactical thinking!
