Waves of India

Thursday 22nd September 2022

I was asked to participate in a cat walk  called Waves of India as part of an event for the South Asia Association that one of my friends is secretary to. She coordinated 12 of us to showcase different sarees from different parts of India, feeling proud for her country, describing each area in detail.  Each of us was to wear a different saree with the vibrant colours all penetrating to the eye.

Rehearsal on Saturday, final rehearsal on Wednesday evening and the actual event on Thursday at 10am with us getting ready from 8am; each of us draping the sarees and having our hair done. Operation Waves of India was a huge success and I felt proud to be showcasing the pride of my friend’s nation and the long lived tradition.

I was asked to do a dance, but opted for a gentle cat walk between the tables with eye contact to the audience to try to connect – I know you think I am a confident person and I will love such things, but stages and catwalks are not my things.

The bunch of girls bonded so well that we are hoping to stay in touch. To start with, the coordinator treated us to a thank you lunch the next day after the event, in a very special historical place; the “80 club” in Colombo.  What a privilege to be part of such a lovely group.  We talked and talked and talked and laughed so much.
