Driverless Tech

The latest in driverless vehicle tech comes to Sri Lanka?

Unfortunately not.

Just the tuk tuk that took the children to school today breaking down between two major junctions on our return home! The poor machine had a broken gearbox stuck in top gear and endured much clutch slipping and stratospheric engine revs hauling the driver and four passengers one way. I fully expected the clutch to pack up on the return with Rennie and I, but instead the engine stalled and wouldn\’t restart until the driver had done some fiddling in the engine bay behind us. The gap in front of us is a direct result by the roadblock we\’d caused – and you can imagine the cacophony of horns!

Sorting out a driver is taking longer than we wished, but with tuk tuks not the safest transport at the best of times and scheduled and unscheduled taxi services unreliable at peak hours, one can\’t come soon enough – never mind for reducing a little of the pure hydrocarbons and thick black diesel particulates we are breathing each day.  A weekend trip to the clear hill country air of Nuwara Eliya was a wonderful tonic of which we\’ll write later.
